State Fair Entries

If you have thought about showing your work and want to enter a juried show for free, start looking over your images now! It is one month before the free entry period for the South Carolina State Fair. From August 1-September 4, the entry fee is $0 and after September 4 the fee goes up to $25. The maximum size for entries is 48"x48". You can have up to 2 entries in either Amatuer or Professional Categories. Whether you are a professional or amatuer is totally up to you. Entries must be framed and ready to hang, preferably behind plexiglass, because no matter how hard the docents work, there will always be someone that wants to touch. If you have any questions about what photos might make a good entry for the state fair feel free to email the club or leave a comment and we'll help you pick out some good photos. If you could have the photos online somewhere for us to look at and maybe narrow down our choices to your top 10 or so it would be helpful.

For any members that may be interested in showing their work I have found an oppotunity that you may be interested in. York County Council for the Arts is hosting their 5th annual Photography competition and show. This is a juried show just like the State Fair and if you want to enter you will have to work quickly. There is an entry fee of $15 for non-members (not our club, but the York County Arts Council) and the entry deadline is 5 June 2009 at 5pm. Details can be found at http://www.yorkcountyarts.org.

Magazine Opportunity

Would you like to have your photos published in a magazine? Kershaw County Living published by Shamrock Media in Sumter, SC is looking for images taken in Kershaw County to put into its new magazine. Shamrock Media also publishes Sumter Living magazine for anyone who has seen that publication and is familiar with that layout, and is now looking to expand into Kershaw County with the same sort of magazine. Images can be sent to kershawcountyliving@hotmail.com or if you would like to see what Sumter Living looks like you can check it out at http://www.sumterliving.com. This is a good and easy way to get your photos seen and I have had a good bit of interest in photos that I have had published in Sumter Living Magazine by people wanting to buy the images. YOU DO NOT have to be a professional, semi-professional, or advanced amateur photographer to do this! As long as you have your camera at its best resolution when you take the photo, it will be good enough to print in the magazine. If you have any questions you can email me by clicking on my name here or email the club and I will answer from there.

May Meeting

This is just a reminder that this coming Tuesday will be the May meeting of the Kershaw County Photography Club at 7pm in the Bassett Gallery. We will have Mr. Bobby Nance from the Sumter Digital Camera Club talking to us about Macrophotography and how he acheives his vision using both DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras. Mr. Nance can be found just about anywhere in or around Sumter photographing something whether it is macrophotography, landscape photography, wildlife photography, or even a wedding or two.

We will also be having the photo contest again with the topic being Macrophotography! Bring in either a digital file on CD, thumb drive or CF card sized to 8"x10" or an actual print for the contest. All club members will have a vote with Mr. Nance choosing the photo that will win the first place prize! If you have other prints you would like Mr. Nance to look at and answer questions about, bring those as well.

The club is also in need of a secretary. If you feel so inclined as to volunteer for this post please let us know! Jobs would include, helping to keep up with emails, keeping up the blog, helping to maintain the clubs presence on flickr, and of course taking notes at the meetings. These notes would be sent to the president and vice president or posted to the blog for everyone to see. Again, if you are interested please let us know and we can help you get set up.

On a final and sad note, club member Dean McGaha passed away from Pancreatic Cancer on Tuesday. He was diagnosed about 6-7 months ago with the disease and he was hopeful to beat it.

SC Wildlife Photography Contest

For those of you who don't know, South Carolina Wildlife magazine sponsors a photo contest every year with 2 divisions; Professional and Amateur. The photos do not have to be JUST wildlife, they can be plants, landscapes, a photo of someone enjoying the outdoors (hunting, biking, fishing, hiking, etc.) and for the past 2 years they have had a weather category. The cost for entry is FREE (my favorite cost) and the pictures have to be either 8x10 inches mounted to 11x14 inches or 11x14inches mounted to 16x20 inches. When I say mounted, I mean that you either get them mounted at the lab (usually only professional labs offer this service) or you pay a visit to your favorite frame shop and have them put it on some foam core for you. If your photo(s) are deemed worthy of display they will be on display at the "Palmetto Sportsman's Classic" held at the State Fair grounds in Columbia and you will get a ticket for admission so that you can see some of the other photos that were entered. If I remember right they had over 400 entries last year, and that was up from the year before by like 150 entries. Go out and take some wildlife or nature photos and put them into the competition. Who knows, maybe next March you will have a winning entry shown in South Carolina Wildlife Magazine!
